Anaemia continues to affect a large number of adolescent girls in India, particularly in tribal and high-burden regions. Poor nutrition, low awareness, and limited access to preventive care put girls at risk, affecting their health, education, and future opportunities.
ChildFund India’s work on adolescent nutrition and anaemia prevention responds to these challenges through community-led, evidence-based efforts. Under this focus area, the RANI (Reduction in Anaemia through Normative Innovations) Project works in high-prevalence districts of Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand to improve haemoglobin levels and overall nutritional status among adolescent girls, including those affected by both nutritional and sickle cell anaemia.
Adolescent girls who have successfully managed anaemia are trained as peer educators, enabling them to guide others on nutrition, food diversity, and anaemia prevention in ways that are locally relevant and trusted.
Interventions span home, school, and community spaces and include adolescent groups, school-based awareness sessions, quizzes, health camps, and community leadership activities.
Efforts are reinforced through IFA and deworming tablet supplementation, the promotion of nutrition gardens, and regular monitoring to support early identification and timely referral of anaemic cases.
By combining education, supplementation, and community involvement, the program strengthens everyday practices while supporting local health systems for sustained nutritional improvement.
4,893 adolescent girls reached through counselling and IFA supplementation by 2023–24
2,100+ girls supported through community nutrition gardens
98 adolescent groups trained on nutrition and anaemia prevention
An increase in girls with normal haemoglobin levels from 30% at baseline to over 60%
Improved awareness and adoption of healthier nutrition practices among adolescents and their families
